Which type of patio door is better, sliding or French?
Neither wins on every count. Sliding patio doors suit wide openings and rooms with no space for doors to swing, with slim frames and large glass panes. French doors suit traditional homes and open fully to give a wider clear gap, but need room to swing.
When do sliding doors make sense?
- The opening is wide and you want maximum glass
- Furniture or a patio sits close to the doors
- You prefer slim, modern frames
When do French doors make sense?
- The house is traditional and the look matters
- You want to open nearly the full width for airflow
- There is clear space inside or outside for the leaves
What about security and weather performance?
Both can be specified with multipoint locking and double glazing. Quality of fit and hardware matter more than the type. Check the threshold, gaskets and hinges or track.
