When replacing a front door, do you have to replace the frame?
No. You only need to replace the frame if it is damaged, out of square or incompatible with the new door. A sound frame can stay, but a failing one will undermine any new door hung in it, however good that door is.
How do you tell if the frame should go?
- Cracks or splits, particularly at the corners
- The frame has bowed along its length
- The two diagonals of the opening differ by more than a few millimetres
- Draughts that survive new seals
- The door has dropped again after hinge adjustment
Does the style of new door matter?
Yes. A thicker composite slab or a glazed design may need a different rebate, hinge positions or locking, which a new frame handles easily. Changing colour or style is another reason to fit a whole doorset.
What happens at the survey?
Jake surveys every job himself at JMF Windows Oxford. He checks the frame, measures the opening and tells you whether the existing frame can stay. JMF Windows Oxford is Certass registered, and each new uPVC door carries a 10-year guarantee.
