What are some common problems with uPVC doors?

Five problems account for most call-outs: a dropped or rubbing door, a stiff lock, draughts, misted glass and loose handles. Most come from hardware wear or hinge settings, not a failed frame, and each has a standard fix, listed below.

    1. Dropped door: hinge screws loosen, so the door rubs and the lock misses the keeps. Hinge adjustment usually cures it.
    2. Stiff lock: a worn gearbox or misaligned keeps. Realigning or replacing the gearbox fixes it.
    3. Draughts: worn gaskets or a tired threshold seal. New seals restore the fit.
    4. Misted glass: the sealed unit has failed and needs replacing.
    5. Loose handle: worn fixings, normally a quick repair.

When is a problem a sign of a bigger fault?

A door that drops again after adjustment, a cracked corner or a frame that is visibly out of square points to the frame itself. Repair costs then rarely make sense.

    Who should look at it?

Jake surveys every job himself at JMF Windows Oxford, so he can tell a quick fix from a replacement. If the door is beyond repair, our uPVC doors come with a 10-year guarantee.

Thinking about a new door? Jake surveys every job himself, and our quotes are free, in writing and without obligation. We fit across Oxford, Kidlington, Bicester, Witney, Abingdon and the villages around. Call 01865 708464 or ask for a free quote.
