Which is better, an aluminium door or a wooden door?
Choose aluminium for slim frames, long life and minimal maintenance, and choose wood for warmth, character and repairability. Both can be secure and thermally efficient when properly specified. Aluminium suits modern openings and large glazed doors; wood suits period homes and conservation areas.
How do they compare?
- Maintenance: aluminium needs washing; wood needs periodic re-coating.
- Appearance: aluminium has slimmer sightlines; wood has traditional detail.
- Repair: wood can be planed and refinished; aluminium is usually replaced if damaged.
- Thermal: aluminium needs a thermal break to perform well.
How long do they last?
Aluminium is commonly quoted at 30 to 45 years, and well-maintained timber at 60 years or more. Both depend on finish quality and exposure, and neither lasts well if the finish is neglected.
Is either more secure?
Security depends on the multipoint lock, hinges, cylinder and certification, such as PAS 24, not on the material. A tested timber door can match a tested aluminium one.
