Local vs national: what changes when you choose an Oxford firm

Anglian trades through ASHI Group Limited, based in Norwich (Companies House 02540020), and Anglian, Everest and Safestyle are all trading names of that one company.

  • Who you deal with. Anglian sends a designer, then a separate surveyor once you’ve ordered. A local firm such as JMF often has the same small team handle both.
  • Seeing the product. Anglian’s nearest showroom to Oxford that we found is in Milton Keynes; several local firms have one closer, including A&C, Silent View, Mcleans and Legacy.
  • Local knowledge. Four in ten Oxford homes predate 1940, and parts of the city carry Article 4 directions limiting window changes, so local experience with older frames and planning rules helps.
  • Aftercare. A firm based down the road is easier to get back out than a national call centre.
  • A genuine second quote. Anglian, Everest and Safestyle are all priced by the same company, so an independent local quote is a real point of comparison.

Anglian at a glance

Company ASHI Group Ltd, which also trades as Everest and Safestyle
Founded 1966; first showroom opened in Ipswich in 1969 (Anglian’s website)
Getting a price In-home or remote appointment with a designer (Anglian’s website, October 2026)
Published prices None. Anglian says “You won’t find prices on our website”
Nearest showroom to Oxford Dobbies Garden Centre, Milton Keynes, listed as a conservatories showroom; Anglian’s Oxford page lists no showroom (Anglian’s website, October 2026)
Guarantee 10 years on windows, doors and conservatories (“exclusions apply”); 10 to 15 years on gas-filled sealed units (Anglian’s website)
Insurance-backed guarantee Yes, up to the original contract value (Anglian’s website)
Who fits Installer and sales roles advertised as self-employed (Anglian’s careers site, October 2026)
Memberships GGF, FENSA, TrustMark, Secured by Design on some ranges, Made in Britain (Anglian’s website)
Finance 11.9% APR representative; deposits from £249 on windows and doors, excluding timber (Anglian’s website, October 2026)
Trustpilot 3.9 out of 5 from 40,825 reviews, 3,037 in the last year, 21 Oct 2026 (Trustpilot)

Strengths. Long history, British-made products, an insurance-backed guarantee up to full contract value, and the highest Trustpilot score of the three big brands (3.9, versus 3.2 and 2.6), with 60% five-star reviews.

Check first. The faster “4 to 8 week” estimate in Anglian’s terms doesn’t cover Oxford’s OX postcodes (Anglian’s terms and conditions, October 2026), and recent low-score Trustpilot reviews often cite slow aftercare and delayed fitting dates.

How we chose the Oxford alternatives

We checked every firm on 21 October 2026 for an active trading record, a base in or near Oxford, window and door fitting (not glass merchants or repair-only), and public reviews, noting showroom details on the way. That ruled out High Wycombe and Milton Keynes chains and anyone with no confirmable record. Ratings change weekly, so check the live number before booking anyone, us included.

The 10+ Anglian alternatives in Oxford

1. JMF Windows & Doors (Bunkers Hill, Oxford): best for a local showroom and an owner who measures up

You don’t have to drive to Milton Keynes to see our products. Our showroom is at Unit 4, The Old Scrapyard, Bunkers Hill, Oxford OX5 3BA, open Monday to Friday, 8am to 4.30pm.

JMF Windows & Doors
Google rating 5.0 from 143 reviews (21 Oct 2026)
Trustpilot 4.4 from 12 reviews (Trustpilot)
First visit Paul, our sales manager
Technical survey Jake, who owns the business and is our lead surveyor
Fitted by The fitters named on our Meet the Team page
Guarantee 10 years; product-by-product terms explained before installation
Products uPVC, aluminium and timber windows; uPVC, composite, aluminium and timber doors; conservatories; roofline and cladding
Deposit 50%, after the full technical survey

With us, Paul usually visits first and Jake, the owner, does the detailed measure himself, unlike Anglian’s designer-then-surveyor process. We fit all three main materials: aluminium windows and bifold doors for extensions, named suppliers such as Smart and Origin, conservatories, and timber windows and timber doors for period houses.

Where we’re not the best fit: we don’t repair timber products; our showroom isn’t open weekends (A&C and Silent View open Saturdays); and our Trustpilot profile has only 12 reviews, so most feedback is on Google.

2. Woodcraft Windows (Sandford Gate, Oxford): best for timber in listed and period homes

If Anglian’s timber range has caught your eye, Woodcraft is the specialist to compare it with. Trading as Woodcraft Windows, Traditional Glaze Solutions Ltd was incorporated in 2015 (Companies House 09746509), scoring 4.9 from 89 on Google and 4.8 from 103 on Trustpilot (Trustpilot). It fits timber sash and casement windows, AluClad windows, wooden doors and orangeries, and says it knows conservation areas and listed buildings.

Good to know: we couldn’t confirm a showroom; its Oxford office is listed as open 9am to 5pm weekdays. A similarly named firm, Woodcraft Bespoke Windows Ltd, is in liquidation (Companies House 07855306).

3. Admiral Windows (Cowley, Oxford): best for homeowners who also need commercial or repair work

Admiral has the most Google reviews of any firm on this list: 4.8 from 230. It says it has been going since 1986, with its limited company incorporated in 2000 (Companies House 03961222), and lists FENSA, TrustMark, Trading Standards and SafeContractor approval with a 10-year guarantee. Beyond uPVC and aluminium windows, it handles lantern roofs, repairs and commercial curtain walling.

Good to know: its Cowley site is described as an installation depot rather than a showroom, and it scores 4.3 on Trustpilot from 22 reviews (Trustpilot).

4. Silent View Windows (Thame): best for a showroom with a virtual tour

Silent View has a showroom in Thame with a virtual tour online. Incorporated in 2012 (Companies House 07902920), it says the family business started in 2010, scores 5.0 on Google from 126 reviews, and fits uPVC, aluminium, timber and timber-alternative windows, composite doors and conservatories with FENSA certification and a 10-year guarantee.

Good to know: Google is the only public review source we found.

5. Didcot Windows (Didcot): best for straightforward uPVC with a big review base

Didcot Windows has 4.9 from 207 Google reviews, second only to Admiral for volume. It says it was established in 1988, with the company incorporated in 1991 (Companies House 02635565), says it is FENSA registered, and gives a 10-year guarantee on uPVC frames, sealed units and labour.

Good to know: the showroom is open by appointment only at the moment, so ring ahead.

6. Tropiglaze (Crawley, Witney): best for a long-established firm west of Oxford

Tropiglaze traces its roots to 1972, and the current company was incorporated in 2006 (Companies House 05696501). It says it is rated 9.56 out of 10 from nearly 350 Checkatrade reviews and fits uPVC casement, sash and tilt and turn windows, composite and bifold doors, and conservatories.

Good to know: we couldn’t confirm a showroom, it has 21 Google reviews (4.6), and its site says “full guarantees” without giving a length.

7. A&C Glass & Glazing (Abingdon Road, Oxford): best for a Saturday showroom visit

A&C’s Abingdon Road showroom opens Monday to Friday and Saturday mornings, and it describes itself as “the only window showroom in central Oxford”. It says it has served Oxfordshire since 1987, holds 4.5 on Google from 70 reviews, and is FENSA registered with GGFi insurance-backed guarantees.

Good to know: the guarantee is “up to 10 years”, so ask which products get the full term.

8. Mcleans Glass (Garsington Road, Oxford): a wide range, including heritage flush sash

Mcleans fits a wide range: uPVC, sliding sash, Georgian, leaded, aluminium, heritage flush sash and timber, plus doors, conservatories and orangeries. Incorporated in 2009 (Companies House 06866856), it says it has traded locally for over 20 years, describes itself as CERTASS approved, and holds 4.6 on Google from 107 reviews.

Good to know: showroom visits are by appointment, and the website doesn’t give a guarantee length.

9. Legacy Double Glazing and Bifolds (Grove, Wantage): best for bifold and patio projects

Legacy was incorporated in 2019 (Companies House 12358373) and has 5.0 on Google from 61 reviews. It names its systems: Veka Halo and Residence uPVC, Sheerline aluminium, and Hallmark and Solidor composite doors, with bifolds and roof lanterns. It says its flush sash range is regularly accepted in conservation areas and is FENSA approved.

Good to know: the Wantage showroom is weekdays by appointment, and no guarantee length is published.

10. The Abingdon Window Company (Radley): best small family firm south of Oxford

Family-run since 2006 (Companies House 05689168), the Abingdon Window Company has 4.8 on Google from 33 reviews. It says it is FENSA registered and Guardian Warm Roof approved, fits Korniche lanterns and Smart aluminium bifolds alongside PVC windows, and offers a 10-year warranty with insurance-backed cover.

Good to know: we couldn’t confirm a showroom.

11. Oxon Windows and Doors (Summertown, Oxford): best for North Oxford uPVC

Oxon has 5.0 on Google from 22 reviews and says it offers a 10-year guarantee covering frames, glass and hardware. It says it has traded since 2003, while the current company was incorporated in 2021 (Companies House 13161581), fitting uPVC flush casement, sash, tilt and turn and aluminium windows, plus composite, bifold and patio doors.

Good to know: we couldn’t confirm a showroom; its website lists Mon to Sat 9am to 5pm at its Banbury Road office.

12. Double Glazing Direct (Aylesbury): best for a Which? Trusted Trader

Double Glazing Direct is a Which? Trusted Trader scoring 4.9 from 41 reviews (Which?) and 4.9 from 79 on Google. It was incorporated in 2011 (Companies House 07502730), has a showroom in Aylesbury, names Oxfordshire and Witney in its service area, and fits Residence timber-look windows, flush sash, bifolds and conservatories.

Good to know: Aylesbury is a fair drive from west Oxford, and most reviews on its Which? Trusted Traders profile are from Buckinghamshire customers.

What windows cost in 2026, by material (national guides)

Anglian publishes no prices, so here’s what the main cost guides say for each material.

Item MyJobQuote Checkatrade
uPVC casement window, fitted £350 to £600 (MyJobQuote, Jul 2026) Casement window: £500 to £1,250 (Checkatrade, May 2026)
Aluminium casement window, fitted £550 to £800 (same guide) Aluminium window: £350 to £600 (Checkatrade, Jun 2026)
3-bed semi, uPVC throughout £4,000 to £6,000 £8,000 to £15,000 (3-bed house, all materials)
3-bed semi, aluminium throughout £7,000 to £10,000 Not compared
3-bed semi, timber throughout £10,000 to £16,000 Not compared
Aluminium bifold doors £3,150 to £7,200 (MyJobQuote, Sept 2026) £3,000 to £7,500 plus VAT (Checkatrade, Jul 2026)

Figures aren’t an exact match (Checkatrade’s categories are broader), but timber costs about two and a half times uPVC for a whole house on MyJobQuote’s figures, and the two guides use different bases, so treat any single figure with caution. MyJobQuote also puts South East labour about 15% to 25% above the national average.

What Oxford homes need

  • Listed buildings need consent. Listed building consent is normally required for replacement windows on a listed building, whoever fits them (Oxford City Council).
  • Article 4 directions in some conservation areas. Oxford has 18 conservation areas (same source), and parts of them remove the usual right to change windows without planning permission; Osney Town and Jericho have both had such directions since the 1990s and 2011 respectively (Oxford City Council, Osney Town, Jericho).
  • Four in ten homes predate 1940. 41.0% of Oxford’s 63,780 homes were built before 1940, and 20.1% before 1919 (VOA Council Tax stock of properties 2025), where timber or a convincing timber-look frame is often the right answer.

Five checks before you sign with anyone

  1. Check Part L compliance. Replacement windows need a U-value of 1.4 W/m²K or better, or a Window Energy Rating of band B or above (GOV.UK).
  2. Make sure you’ll get a certificate. A firm on a competent person scheme such as FENSA or CERTASS must give you one within 8 weeks of finishing (GOV.UK).
  3. Know your cancellation rights. Signing at home usually gives 14 days to cancel; check the contract for a made-to-measure exclusion (legislation.gov.uk).
  4. Ask who backs your guarantee and deposit, and get the provider’s name in writing. Paying part by credit card adds Section 75 cover.
  5. Look past the headline saving. Which? warns against prices that drop during a sales visit if you agree on the spot (Which?, Sept 2026); compare the final price, not the discount.

Questions people ask about Anglian

Are local window companies cheaper than Anglian?

Anglian doesn’t publish prices. Cost guides put a uPVC casement window at £350 to £1,250 fitted, depending on spec, so a free local quote alongside an Anglian quote is the only way to compare like for like.

Where is the nearest Anglian showroom to Oxford?

The nearest one we found on Anglian’s own website is at Dobbies Garden Centre in Fenny Stratford, Milton Keynes (MK17 9JH). Locally, JMF, A&C, Mcleans, Silent View, Legacy and Didcot Windows (by appointment) have showrooms.

Are Anglian windows good?

Anglian scores 3.9 out of 5 on Trustpilot from 40,825 reviews, the highest of the three big national brands (Trustpilot, 21 Oct 2026). Reviewers often praise the fitters, while low-score reviews often mention aftercare and delays.

Why choose a local installer over Anglian?

Anglian, Everest and Safestyle are all priced by the same company, so a local firm gives a genuinely separate quote. You also get a nearby showroom, a smaller team from quote to fit, and reviews from Oxford customers you can check.
