What are the negatives of bifold doors?

The main downsides of bifold doors are higher cost, more moving parts to maintain, folded leaves that take up space and block part of the view, and more joints where draughts can creep in. Most can be reduced by good specification and fitting, but they are worth weighing against aluminium bifold doors before you commit.

What goes wrong with bifold doors?

    • Moving parts: every leaf has hinges and runners, and the track needs regular cleaning.
    • Stacking: open leaves sit at the side of the opening and reduce the clear view.
    • Seals: more joints between leaves means more places for draughts or water if fitting is poor.
    • Threshold: flush designs need carefully designed drainage.
    • Structure: a wide opening usually needs a lintel or steel sized by a structural engineer.

    Can the downsides be reduced?

Yes. Fewer, wider leaves mean fewer joints, quality hardware keeps operation smooth, and a thermally broken frame with a PAS 24 tested lock deals with insulation and security. Cleaning the track and lubricating the hardware once a year helps the doors last.

Do bifold doors need Building Regulations approval?

Replacing existing doors normally needs a compliance certificate from a registered installer, not a separate application. Widening the opening is different: that needs structural calculations and Building Control approval, and listed buildings and conservation areas need checking first.

Are bifold doors still worth having?

They suit anyone who wants most of a wall open at once. If the doors will rarely open fully, a sliding door avoids several of these drawbacks. Jake surveys every job himself, so the opening, threshold and structure are checked before anything is ordered.
