What are the disadvantages of sliding patio doors?

The main downsides of sliding patio doors are that only part of the opening is ever open, the track collects dirt, large panes are heavy to fit, and older designs were easier to force. Most issues are solved by good design and cleaning. See our sliding patio doors.

What are the disadvantages of sliding doors?

    • Opening: a two-pane door leaves about half the width closed.
    • Track: debris and weather need regular clearing.
    • Weight: large glass needs careful handling and support.
    • Security: older or basic models can be easier to lift or force.
    • Seals: draughts can appear if the track or seals are worn.

How do you reduce these problems?

Choose a system with anti-lift protection, a multipoint lock and PAS 24 testing. Brush and vacuum the track monthly, wipe seals and lubricate rollers once a year.

When is a sliding door the wrong choice?

When you need the whole width clear, a bifold or French pair is a better fit. Jake surveys every job himself, so the opening, threshold and structure are checked before anything is ordered.
